Coping With Separation

If you are going through a separation or divorce, the process can be pretty confusing and stressful.  Besides the enormous personal changes, you are confronted with a legal maze, expensive sounding lawyers, and the need to make important financial decisions.  When trust has broken down, it helps tremendously to work with a neutral facilitator, or mediator, takes you through the issues one by one, looking at options that might satisfy everyone's needs.

Even if there is anger and anxiety, mediation can assist you in planning a future that meets your children's needs, and yours.  You do not need to both engage attorneys to litigate; this almost always exacerbates any tensions already existing.  The nature of a court "battle" involves each side accusing the other of misdeeds in order to win the case.  Once hurtful words are spoken or written in court documents it is hard to repair the damage.  If you have children, that damage can make co-parenting very difficult in years to come.  Mediation assists you in identifying mutual parenting goals and preserving the working relationship you need.

Most mediations for divorce take place over several weeks or months.

Family Mediation Atlanta uniquely offers the Work It Out Week (OR Weekend). This consists of one or more sessions in four hour time blocks over several consecutive days. The schedule is designed to meet your needs.

During your mediation, the mediator will guide you through discussions that enable you to resolve parenting (custody) issues, division of property, expense sharing, child support, spousal support, and insurance issues. Within one week, your mediator will provide you with a written separation agreement detailing the decisions you made. If you file "pro se", without an attorney, you may use this agreement to submit to the Court for an uncontested divorce.

Our program requires that participants with financial issues do some preparation prior to their sessions.  The mediator will provide instructions for that preparation.  This method is perfect for couples who want to make a full, immediate plan without returning for sessions dragging on for months.
Couples who have not yet separated will find great peace of mind in working out all the details prior to either person moving out.  This allows each person to feel more comfortable in taking concrete steps such as refinancing a home or signing a lease agreement. Children adjust better to changes when their parents “have their act together” and can explain exactly what will be happening.
